What started in a dorm room at Harvard University by some undergrads has grown into a company worth over 80 billion dollars. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work there?
Here’s how to land the job, get the perks, and be part of one of the biggest companies in the world.
Getting Hired
There are many different types of jobs at Facebook. They need software engineers, designers, online operations managers, marketing geniuses, business handlers, and more. You’ll be up against some heavy competition—Facebook receives over 250,000 job applications each year.
If it looks like you have the right stuff, you’ll be contacted via phone by a recruiter to discuss your previous experience. After the phone screening, potential employees are flown out to Facebook’s Silicon Valley headquarters for a series of on-site interviews with the hiring manager and a group including members of the team you’re hoping to join.
Work Life
Before you start, you’ll go through a six-week “bootcamp”—a combination of orientation and training program. All employees go through this to help them understand company culture, build relationships, and get exposure to various technologies.
Expect to be super busy—Facebook is always developing to better connect its users. You’ll be given a lot of responsibility to produce valuable contributions to the company.
Unlike companies where the CEO is a absent figure, there is a very open culture at Facebook. Employees can ask questions directly to Mark Zuckerburg at their weekly Q & A that ensures everyone at the companies knows what is going on in every department.
Co-workers
You’ll be working with some of the best and the brightest people in the world. Many of them are hired straight out of college, but there are also many experienced engineers from other top companies like Google and Amazon.
Campus & Offices
The Silicon Valley campus is like a small city—there’s 11 different buildings over 57 acres. Employees use free bikes to get around and can get their computers fixed at one of the IT desks which are in every building. There’s a gym and a place to get a haircut on the premises.
Open office spaces—no cubicles—allow you to easily ask co-workers for their opinions and receive their feedback. Instead of post-its, you can write on the walls at Facebook. Employees are encouraged to change their surroundings, by writing messages to one another on massive chalkboard walls. If you choose, you can even have a stand-up desk that provides better circulation and encourages more movement.
Other Perks
Facebook provides its employees with a great selection of food and drinks every day, whether you’re looking for a quick snack or full lunch. The free candy shop provides frozen yogurt, ice cream, a toppings bar, candy and a fresh bakery. Not super hungry? Spend your lunch break playing games in the video arcade.
If you forgot any of your computer accessories like your charger, employees can swipe their badge and choose the accessory they need from 24-hour, free vending machines spread all over campus. The company also hosts fun events for their employees and because it’s such an open office environment, many people make plenty of friends to hang out with outside office hours. You’ll also receive great health and dental benefits.
