Wishing for summer break in the winter is more than just you ready for school to be over, summer is actually scientifically proven to make people happier! Here’s the science behind why you’re having the time of your life this summer.
When sunlight hits your skin it triggers the production of Vitamin D. Several studies have shown that a deficit of Vitamin D is correlated with a dip in mood.
Which is why you kind of look like this while out in the sun.
And this in the winter.
In addition the sun helps the production of Melatonin, the chemical that regulates our body clocks when the seasons change.
Some researchers theorize that in winter months, the lack of sunlight screws with people’s internal clocks, compromises their sleep patterns, and can make people depressed.
Other researchers claim that sunlight ups the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter many scientists believe to be the culprit behind depression. According to this theory, some people’s depressive symptoms are alleviated when the sun is out, because their serotonin-manufacturing system kicks into a high gear.
Also, even with the hot weather, people tend to drink more water during summer so they are more hydrated.
You have more energy when you’re well hydrated and therefore are more likely to be up for some fun activities.
And with more activities, comes more physical exertion which releases endorphins that make you happy.
So get out in that sun, but don’t forget the sun screen!
