Lightsabers

The lightsaber is an iconic weapon in the future science of Star Wars. Extendable, plastic replicas of this laser sword can be found in toy aisles around the world. But, it’s not so easy to replicate the real thing.
Attempts to make a lightsaber out of lasers have utterly failed: the weapon would require a mirror at the tip of the blade to limit its size. This would require a support structure around the whole weapon, which would ruin the iconic look of the lightsaber.

As if that wasn’t enough, there is no way that our current technology could enclose a power supply strong enough to power a true laser sword in such a small hilt.
But, there’s hope: instead of using lasers, one could create a plasma lightsaber, which would put out enough heat to melt an object instantaneously (similar to a blade) and generate colors similar to the weapons seen in Star Wars. It’s not a perfect replica, but it’s a start.
